Every third Saturday of each month I`m at Brecon to run and organise the Craft fair. I set up my table, put my work on display and wait for the crowds to come in to buy. On one of these days there, I believe it was a July one. This very well dressed Lady came to my table, we chatted for ages, she liked my work and did buy a couple of my turned bowls. During our chat she asked if I had ever done Chelsea craft fair, No, I replied , I had not even heard about the Chelsea fair. The Lady went on to say, that her very good friend, Lady Phillipa Powell organised and run the fair, each October, held in Chelsea town hall on the King`s road in London. I knew the King`s road well, because back when I first got married and lived in London for a short while, I had exhibited my painting there in an open air Arts show each Saturday, it was always busy and a good place for sales of works, continuing on and back to our chat, Mrs Bull, this was the lady iI was talking with, asked for my business card, she told me she would talk to Lady Phillipa Powell and say how nice my work was, then may be I would be asked to Exhibit at Chelsea and sell my work too. About a month went by before I got the Letter. Lady Phillipa Powell had written, asking for Photos of my work. These I sent to her by return post, Then a week or so later her reply came. Yes , she liked my work and said that this years Fair was already fully booked, but would offer me a place in the following years Fair. Brilliant, plenty of time to get all the work done or so I thought. Well, a spanner in the works. I got another letter from Lady Powell, saying that they had a cancellation, so a place was available if I wanted it. I was asked to send a Cheque to cover the fees for the space. It was for £300 (pounds). Me being a bit green was thinking it was a typing error, so I sent my cheque for £30 (pounds). A letter came back very quick, to say, could I please pay the full amount the balance being £270. This caused a sharp intake of breath I can tell you. Up un till then, most of the fairs I attended where all small affairs, the cost of a pitch was from £5 to £20 max. This was a lot of money for me to out lay. There was a lot to consider, first being up in London for seven days, I had a friend who lived in Chelsea, so accommodation was not a cost, but food, away from my workshop, travel cost and all the little extras not thought about. Well I bit the bullet and payed up. We are now into August, the fair is in October, I had a lot to sort out, First get enough work together, then It fell the same time as Brecon fair did, so get someone to be there to set up and collect the rents off the other stall holders, so I could pay the council. Plus at this time I also had "From the wood" gallery in Hay-on Wye, we opened that in 1983, It was now 1986. More about the Gallery later. Back to Chelsea, from August to when I travelled to London in the October I hardly got much sleep, It was work to bed, bed to work. I worked hard. l your story and let your visitors know a little more about you.
