Journey On

Journey on When living in Hay-on-wye, Audrey and I did a lot together. We got our work selected for the Edinburgh festival crafts. I had never been up to Scotland, so this was a first for me. The day we travelled up it was a nice still morning, I packed the car the night before, so it was just up and go. We set out very early, 4.30am, I like travelling early, there is never a lot of traffic, so we made good headway before most folks had brushed the sleep out their eyes. Getting on the Motorway and on up the country, we decided we would take a detour and have lunch in the Lake district, another area I had not visited. We arrived in Windermere, such a beautiful place, It`s no wonder tourist flock there. Finding a place for lunch and a very short stay we got on our way, to Scotland. Arriving in Edinburgh around 4.00pm. Found our way to Princess Street gardens, where the crafts venue was held. We went a week before the event so we would have a bit of time to play the tourist. Already booked was our B&B run by a very quiet old couple, their bungalow on the out skirts of the city was ideal, it was not far from the city center and being on the out skirts easy access to the country side and nice places to visit. The first day there, we decided to visit a few places along the east coast, we headed out on the A90 over the Forth Road Bridge in South Queensferry, which we later visited most evenings. There was a lovely restaurant that overlooked the Forth Railway Bridge, and at night this was all lite up. Back to our day out, once we got over the bridge, we got onto the A921 a road that hugged the coast round to Kirkcaldy, all that day we stay close to the coast, just stopping in most the small places along the route Ans truther, St Andrews, we bypassed Dundee wanting to avoid built up areas, our last port of call was “Arboreta.” One place that stayed with me was Lower Largo the Birth place of, Alexander Selkirk, aka Robinson Crusoe. I believe it was here that we stopped for Lunch. Best steak I ever had, just melted in my mouth. I would say one of the best meals ever. The whole day was filled with interest. In the evening we were so tired from travelling we just crashed out early. Next morning it was raining heavy, with some fog about. We were up, had breakfast and out fairly early, on our way out from Edinburgh thinking it was not going to be a very pleasant day to be travelling. Setting off our trip today was out to Oban, then we would go up towards Ben Nevis and back down through Glen Coe. Some stunning scenery. So pleased when the rain stopped the clouds lifted and we had beautiful views of the incredible surrounds. It was nice getting out and about, but the day came for us to get set up with our display, my work and Audrey`s pictures went well together, both using Natural materials to achieve our goal. First it opened with a private view evening, then five days for people to visit. Sales were good, we both sold some nice pieces of work, but there was one of Audrey`s pictures that stood out. A large Golden Eagle standing on a wooden stump. This picture was about three foot tall by two foot wide, framed and mounted. One of the people that organized the Exhibition. Chris Rattray an established Artist, saw the picture and was really taken by it, saying that he knew someone that was a collector of everything to do with Eagles, this collector lived up in the Orkney Isles. Chris said he would phone him to let him know about this picture. What a surprise when Chris came over to us at our stand to let us know this Collector was going to fly down to Edinburgh just to see it. On the promise of having such a good sale, plus the fact that on opening Chris Rattray had given us a small tot of whiskey to try, which by the way was a cask whiskey, just ready to be bottled. It was so smooth; we went in search of it. All the top off licenses in Scotland. We came home after the show with about a dozen good bottles of single malt, all except the one we went in search of. We did intend keeping this until Christmas, but somehow friends would call by and we ended up having tasting`s, day`s and evenings until it had all gone. Silly maybe but nice. We know how to enjoy ourselves.
